Starting in 2021, Safer Country worked with Fairfax County to create the first-in-the-nation red flag law public awareness campaign. That campaign featured signs in every Fairfax Connector bus with information to empower people to intervene in advance of a shooting. Written in English and Spanish, they say, “Prevent A Gun Tragedy, Speak Up!” Similar signs were also put in all DASH buses in the City of Alexandria,
Safer Country is working on projects to gun suicides by active-duty military and veterans, and legislation that would make people liable for anyone shot in their home if the gun and ammunition were not separately secured; require guns transported in cars and truck are locked in safes out of the reach of the driver to reduce theft and the likelihood of road rage gunfights; and legislation to revise the penalty for persons convicted of a misdemeanor of brandishing a gun, so that they would lose the right to have a gun for a period of time.
Safer Country is partnering with the National Black Movie Association to help the voices of Black public school students be heard about their gun tragedy experiences and with law enforcement to keep guns out of the hands of dangerous political extremists, such as those who brought guns to the January 6, 2021 seditionist insurrection at our Nation’s Capitol.
